What To Do When You Move Into A New Office Building
Most business owners will want their businesses to grow and expand, and if you have an office space, that will eventually mean finding somewhere new to work as you outgrow your old one. That’s a good thing, even if moving is quite stressful - it shows that you’re reaching your goals and you’re successful.
Once you do move and you find yourself in the new office, it’s a good idea to know what things you need to do first so you can minimize the disruption to your business as much as possible. With that in mind, here are some jobs to put on your to-do list.
This task might not be relevant in every situation, but if you’ve moved into an office space or building and it’s messy, dirty, or full of ‘stuff’, then you’ll need to clear it. Anything left behind by the previous owner or tenant really should be removed by the time you move in, but sometimes it does get left behind. You’ll need to check to see whether it’s needed or not, and if it’s not, you can look at ways to dispose of it. The easiest is usually skip hire, as you can just throw the stuff in, and the professionals will take it away.
Once the building is completely empty, you can give it a deep clean. Remember, it’s never going to be this empty again - at least not until you move out - so this could be your one chance to make it sparkle, which is a great way to start a new era in your business.
At this point, you might want to decorate the space, which is a good idea even if it doesn’t really need to be done - you’ll be putting your own stamp on things, and it will all feel much more homely and personal, so ideally you and your team will be able to be as productive as possible there.
A fresh coat of paint and new flooring is probably all you need to make things look wonderful, but if you want to go further, you certainly can - you can change the window treatments,
the lighting, and even the exterior if you want to (and if you own the building; if you rent it, you’ll need to ask for permission first).
Once the office space is clean and clear and decorated how you want it, it’s time to bring in your furniture. Think ahead about where you want to have everything and what the layout is going to be, as once things are in place, it’s going to be an effort to move them around again.
If you’re not sure what the best layout is, this is a great time to get
your employees involved. Ask them where they want the furniture, how the desks should be arranged, and so on, and they’re sure to have some ideas to help you. Remember, they’re the ones who’ll be spending time at those desks in that office, so their opinion is certainly important.
